Twenty places to advertise your non-profit job
Are you struggling with recruitment to non-profit and charity jobs?
These are some of the worries and frustrations we’ve heard from clients recently:
“It’s tough to recruit at the moment.”
“We posted a role and received no decent applications.”
“I don’t know how to diversify the pool of candidates applying to my jobs.”
Job Description Checklist
There are plenty of reasons why your job ad might not be attracting high quality applications. A checklist of questions to ask yourself:
Have you benchmarked the salary within the sector? Are you offering the role at the right level of experience for the level of responsibility?
Are your expectations realistic? Some charities seem to be searching for a ‘unicorn’ – someone who can fix all their problems in one fell swoop. Be honest with yourself about what this one role can achieve.
Are you offering enough flexibility? Does the role have to be full-time? Are you open to job-shares, flexible working, remote working? Be specific!
Are you adhering to best practice around #ShowTheSalary and #NonGradsWelcome?
Have you written the job ad and job description in accessible, plain English? Have you removed any industry jargon?
Have you removed discriminatory phrasing and barriers that might discourage disabled people, people of colour, people with caring responsibilities, people with chronic illness to apply?
Have you demonstrated why your organisation is a great place to work? Include a list of all benefits, a description of your culture and what you offer.
Are you offering candidates a chance to speak with you before applying? This could be individual calls, or a Zoom webinar where you answer any questions, introduce yourself and the role.
Where to advertise your charity job
If you’ve answered yes to all these questions but are still struggling to attract a diverse pool of great candidates, what next?
We would suggest it’s time to look at where you are recruiting, not just how. Posting an ad on your website and Charity Job is often the extent of charity recruitment efforts. But this will only get you a very narrow reach.
One of the best things you can do to improve your recruitment is review where you advertise your jobs and widen the net.
We’ve put together a list of twenty places to advertise your non-profit or charity job. Many of these sites specialise in reaching a particular target audience, e.g. young black professionals, women looking for part-time roles, LGBT+ professionals.
One client who used this list gave us some feedback: "This is absolutely great, thanks so much! Several I'd never even heard of, which just goes to show... what a treasure trove of info. I so appreciate you sharing this."
